The new year started out great - last week I found an invitation in my emails asking my participation at a special event at Epcot! It's the annual Epcot Flower and Garden Festival which runs at the park in Orlando from March 7 to May 20, 2012. Click on the link to go to the website, and halfway down you see the announcement looking like below the first picture (they still have it as 2011).

Art in the Garden celebration of plein air artists - 3/25 - 3/27

Yes, I am going to paint with 15 other artists in some of the countries showcased there at Epcot. We will have free board at one of the high-caliber Disney hotels, along with lunch. We are allowed to sell our paintings right off the easel, the only thing we need to make sure is to be a proper ambassador for Disney, meaning politeness above all. We will be there for the long weekend of March 25-27, so 3 days of painting and talking to the tourists!
Ja, ich werde mit 15 anderen Kuenstler in einigen der "Laender" in Epcot malen und die Touristen unterhalten. Wir werden offizielle Disney Botschafter sein, und das wichtigste fuer uns wird Laecheln sein. We bekommen freie Uebernachtungen in einem tollen Disney Hotel bekommen, und Mittagessen. We duerfen auch unsere Gemaelde in Epcot direkt an interessierte Touristen verkaufen, ohne Prozente an Disney. We werden 3 tage malen, 25.-27. Maerz.

Merry Christmas!

I finished and delivered a painting of a home in Deland before Christmas, as it was a surprise gift for the client's wife. I heard she really liked it.
Ich malte vor Weihnachten einen Auftrag fuer einen Klienten, der es als Ueberraschung seiner Frau schenken wollte.

I was going to paint it plein air, but for some reason the weather and my schedule never clicked, since late October, and so I had to paint it from several photo resources. It came out wonderful though because I could use the knowledge I had accumulated from all my plein air outings and that made the highlights sparkle, and added detail in the shadows.
Ich wollte es eigentlich an Ort und Stelle malen, doch das Wetter und meine Wochenendplaene stimmten nie, so musste ich halt von Photos malen, was gut gelungen ist, da ich meine Erfahrung vom Plein Air Malen daran anwenden konnte. Die Highlights schimmern, und ich habe viel Details in den Photos, was vom ordinaeren Photoabmalen nicht moeglich sein wuerde.

Lake Helen Christmas Tour

Today I went to Lake Helen to participate with other painters from the Central Florida Plein Air Gruoup in the bi-annual Christmas Tour of Houses. They had tours of about ten cute old houses and churches, people dressed in old-fashioned garb, riders with horses, and people riding old bicycles (the ones with the huge wheel on the front - about 6' tall - , and the tiny one in the back), and some oldtimer cars. It was very cool.
Heute traf ich mich mit acht anderen Kuenstlern im schlaefrigen Ort von Lake Helen (ca. 20km westlich von uns), wo eine Weihnachtstour des Dorfs stattfand. Sie hatten Leute in 1900er Kleidung und Hochraeder, einige Reiter mit eleganten Pferden, Oldtimer Autos, und man konnte 10 der alten Haueser, die fuer Weihnachten geschmueckt waren, auch innen beansichtigen. Es war echt toll.

I settled on one of the churches and met a lot of people while I stood on the street corner in the beautiful sunshine. This time I had a masonite panel toned with Rose Madder, which was very pink. This was new to me as I usually use burnt sienna. The beginning was a bit difficult, but I liked how it made everything a bit rosy because I apply my paints quite thinly, especially in the shadows and the sky. A lot of visitors asked me about this pink underpainting.
Ich nahm mir eine der kleinen suessen Kirchen vor, und bekam auch viele Besucher an meiner Strassenecke, sogar auch ein Ehepaar aus Muenchen! Sehr oft lerne ich Deutsche bei meinen Malausfluegen kennen, die entweder nach Amerika gezogen sind, oder als Touristen da sind. Heute fing ich auf einer rosa Untermalung an, was schwierig am Anfang war, doch am Schluss leuchtete die Farbe schoen durch, und es gefaellt mir. Viele Leute fragten mich wegen der rosa Farbe...

The finished painting below looks a bit too red in this photo. The colors are not that strong on the actual canvas. I only used my usual colors in addition to the pink underwash; White, Ultra Blue, Burnt Sienna, Cad Yellow Deep, and Naples Yellow.
Das fertige Gemaelde ist nicht ganz so farbig und roetlich in echt. Ich benutzte wie immer meine 5 ueblichen Farben.

Canaveral Seashore Paintout - Gala Reception

Last night was the reception for patrons and guests at the Eldora House. We had a good turnout, but not as many sales as expected. Overall it was a great event, the food was wonderful, there was live music, and the night air was very brisk. I did not sell anything, but definitely got my name out and some leads for future teaching and commissions possibly. It was hard to say goodbye to all the great artists that are now considered friends.
Gestern abend war die Gala, mit vielen Besuchern, doch leider nicht vielen Kaeufern. Es war jedoch ein toller Abend mit gutem Essen, live Musik, und kuehler Nachtluft. Ich lernte viele nette Leute kennen, und werde vielleicht dadurch einige Kommissionen bekommen, und eine Chance zum Lehren. Es war schade, zu all den Kuenstlern, die nun Freunde sind, Goodbye zu sagen.

Canavera Seashore Paintout - Day 5

Yesterday was the final day and it started with rain. Instead of being able to paint reflections on wet streets in an urban environment as I had intended, the streets dried rather quickly, and instead I settled on painting a different view of the Eldora House in the afternoon. The mosquitoes were out in masses again, so I finished rather quickly.
Gestern war der letzte Tag zum Malen, und obwohl es regnete, die Konditionen waren nicht ideal, um nasse Strassen mit Reflektionen zu malen, da der Regen ziemlich rasch trocknete.
Ich ging dann zum Eldora House, wo die Gallerie mit unseren Bildern untergebracht ist, und malte von einem anderen Blickpunkt. Viele Schnaken wieder, so dass ich alles schnell fertigmachte.

Canaveral Seashore Paintout - Evening 4

Last night was the sunset paintout at JB's Fishcamp. This is a relaxed seafood restaurant about a mile north of the park entrance. We all met there after 4pm and found our favorite spots. There was the marsh view across the lagoon, some kayaks, a boat shed, the restaurant itself, and a nice street view to paint. We had lots of visitors, and they all wanted to chat and look. It was great!
Gestern abend hatten wir das Malereignis bei einem Seafood-restaurant in der Lagune, sehr malerisch und tolle Mal-Szenen. Wir trafen uns alle so gegen 16 Uhr und fanden tolle Szenen mitten unter den vielen Besuchern.

I painted on the dock with Lynn Whipple, who tried out and loved my masonite boards. Painter Larry Moore even came by, he was my first plein air instructor exactly 3 years ago! And I was painting my plein air pieces #93 and 94!
Ich malte auf dem Bootsteg neben Lynn, die auch gerne urbane Szenen malt, so wie ich. Dann kam noch Larry Moore zu Besuch, mit dem ich das Plein Air Malen vor genau 3 Jahren angefangen hatte. Seit seinem Workshop habe ich nun 94 Bilder draussen gemalt!

Since Lynn is interested in the same gritty, more urban stuff like me, we decided to turn our backs to the marsh before the sun set, and instead paint the rows of telephone poles leading past the parking lot to the beach.
Lynn und ich drehten den Ruecken zum malerischen Marsch-Blick und malten die Telephonposten, die ueber den Parkplatz hin zum Meer leiteten.

My first, and probably last, sunset painting. I do work fast, but this needs even more speed than I'm used to. And a very good accuracy in color mixing, which I am not good at and/or dislike. So anyway, I tried it, but think I will stay with the houses and alleyways during sunny days.

Mein erstes, und letztes!, Sonnenunterganggemaelde! Oh weh, da muss man echt schnell malen, und vor allem akkurated Farben hinkriegen.

Another challenge ahead: It is raining and totally overcast. Looks like we are going to paint downtown again, to catch the reflections on the wet streets. That's more like it, and something I had wanted to do for a long time too. So off I go, til tonight!

Heute regnet es den ganzen Tag, doch alle haben sich entschieden, die nassen Strassen mit den Reflektionen zu malen, was ich auch schon immer im Auge gehabt habe. Also, los geht's, bis heute abend dann!

Canaveral Seashore Paintout - Day 4

It was a very hot morning on Thursday, and most of us met at Flagler Ave. This is a very picturesque quaint street with painted houses, galleries and little shops. I chatted with some artists, and then settled on the old structure at the boardwalk. I had wanted to paint it for years.
Gestern frueh war es ziemlich heiss. Die meisten Kuenstler trafen sich auf der malerischen Flagler Avenue mit kleinen Shops, bunten Haeusern, und einfach einem laid-back feel. Ich schwatzte mit einigen Kuenstlern, und entschied mich dann fuer den Boardwalk am Strand, was ich schon seit Jahren malen wollte.

10 Uhr morgens, ich habe gerade angefangen mit meiner Untermalung und der Aqua-Farbstimmung.

Soon four other artists joined me, most of them painting the same scene. It was a lot of fun, we learned from each other and shared our knowledge. (Thanks for the people and mirror tricks, Berto!). We also had a lot of visitors and interested people who we invited to the sunset paintout that evening.
Innerhalb einer halben Stunde kamen noch vier Kuenstler zu mir, und wir malten dann fast alle dieselbe Szene. Das ist immer interessant, da jeder seinen eigenen Stil hat. Wir lernten viel von einander, und hatten grossen Spass, auch mit den vielen Touristen, die mit uns redeten.

We soon learned that this structure, which is rotten and very rusty, but sooo picturesque, will be torn down next week to be replaced "by something similar". A lot of the locals we chatted with did not like this, and also we found it sad to see this landmark go. Hopefully the replacement will have a similar charm.

Wir erfuhren dann, dass die Struktur, die sehr verrottet und ein rostiges Dach hat, naechste Woche demoliert wird! Die meisten Bewohner fanden das sehr schade, und hoffen, dass die neue Struktur denselben Charm haben wird.

Canaveral Seashore Paintout - Day 3

Hello again! We all painted downtown New Smyrna Beach today. Most of us were on Canal St., but since I have painted those alleyways already 4 times this summer with the First Saturday Group, I went to the marina and located these two boats right by the small North Causeway bridge. The light was falling on them just right, so I started another big one, 11x14. Below is my setup with the boats Vela and another small one in the background. I also included some palm trees as I feel much more confident about them now.

Heute malten wir alle in New Smyrna Beach, die meisten auf Canal Street. Da ich diese Szenen jedoch vom Sommer her kannte, ging in um den Block rum zum Hafen und fand diese tollen Boote mit dem richtigen Sonnenschein.

Unfortunately I had to cut my painting day short today, as my regular job needed some of my time too.

Leider konnte ich am Nachmittag nicht mehr malen, da sie mich in meinem regulaeren Job brauchten.

Morning At The Harbor 11"x14" oil on masonite

At 7pm tonight we had a reception at Arts On Douglas gallery. Each one of us could display one of the recent paintings on an easel, and then chat with the many visitors. We all had a great time, with wonderful food and wine provided by Chef Sue. Lots of people, and lots of very positive comments. Many of the locals recognized the scene and location I had portrayed. We had a good time. Tomorrow most of us will be painting on Flagler Ave., with the sunset painting at JB's Fishcamp tomorrow at around 6-7pm. Hope you can come!

Heute abend um 19 Uhr hatten wir einen Empfang in einer lokalen Gallerie, wo wir alle eines unserer neuen Bilder ausstellen durften. Wir hatten viele interessierten Besucher, und vor allem mein Bild wurde sehr bewundert. Viele der oertlichen Leute erkannten meine Szene gleich auf den ersten Blick und gaben mir tolle Kommentare. Viel Spass und Erfolg!

Canaveral Seashore Paintout - Day 2

Today was very very windy, so the beach was out for painting. I settled on the palmtree that overlooked the lagoon by the Eldora House. Almost every one of us has painted it already or will soon. It's so typical Florida ;-)
Heute war es immer noch sehr windig, und am Strand konnte man ueberhaupt nicht anfangen. Ich entschied mich fuer die typische Floridianische Palme, die so malerisch ueber der Lagune hing. Jeder von uns hat sie schon gemalt, oder wird sie noch malen ;-)

I had to wipe down the foreground in the bottom in frustration, but then it got much better and it was ready for framing by 11am.
Es ging okay, bis auf den Boden unten, den ich kurz vor Schluss runterwischte und so halb stehenliess, was ziemlich gut aussieht. Fertig im Rahmen um 11 Uhr morgens!

Morning at Eldora 8"x10" oil on masonite

After a quick lunch I drove to Turtle Mound where it was still windy. It's an elevation of 40 feet and you can have a great overlook to the lagoon, the ocean, and both ends of the Park. I tried some twisted trees, but lost interest after the sun kept going in and out of clouds, making this pure nature attempt even harder. I decided to call it a day, and rest up for tomorrow, when we meet downtown to paint - downtown! Yeah, buildings, wires, streets, man made stuff! Till tomorrow night. Ruth
Nach einem kurzen Mittagessen fuhr ich noch herum und versuchte ein weiteres Gemaelde, doch der Wind, die Sonne die sich dauernd versteckte, und die Idee, pure Natur zu malen, gab mir dann den Rest und ich beendete den Tag ohne ein weiterest Gemaelde. Dafuer werde ich morgen mehr malen koennen, da wir endlich in der Stadtmitte von New Smyrna Beach sind fuer die naechsten 2 Tage - super Gebauede, Kabel, Strassen usw. Canaveral Seashore Paintout - Day 1 Paintings

In the morning I set up right by the Eldora House. The architecture was interesting and the shadows made a nice pattern. Since this was my first painting and I was full of energy, I decided on a "large" 14"x11".
Am Morgen setzte ich meine Staffelei gleich draussen vor dem Eldora Haus auf. Die Architektur und die Schattenspiele interessierten mich, und ich attacktierte ein "grosses" 35cm x 28cm.

Underpainting. The one on the left shows the initial placement of elements done in a rigger brush. Then I go over it with a normal bright and lay in the shadows, at times obliterating my initial drawing. That is okay, as it is plain to see, that a painting of just shadows and lights gives more information and looks more finished than a rather detailed drawing. Don't you agree?

Wie man sieht, haelt ein Gemaelde aus nur Schatten und Licht viel mehr zusammen als eine pure Zeichnung mit mehr Details. So fange ich meine Gemaelde an, eine kurze Zeichnung, um die Plazierung richtig hinzukriegen, und dann die all-wichtigen Schatten.

Color lay-in. I proceed with the main colors, the shadows and greenery, and then - ah, the sky blue. It always looks great when you start the sky over the burnt sienna underpainting. On the right, I am almost finished with the background, and just need to finish the shadows of the porch and details all over.
Dann lege ich die Farben ein, was besonders atemberaubend ist, wenn man den Himmel ueber das gebrannte Sienna der Untermalung malt. Rechts bin ich fast fertig, bis auf die Schatten unter'm Haus und die letzten Details.

After lunch I decided to drive around and scout out some locations for tomorrow. I already felt exhausted, and the wind was really whipping. Just as I wanted to give up, I found a cozy spot at a lagoon, where I met 3 other artists. I decided to do a little painting right there, to push myself. It was a marsh view, with just water and trees, nothing I really felt comfortable with. See scene setup below.

Nach dem Mittagessen wollte ich eigentlich nur rumfahren, um einige Plaetze fuer morgen auszukundschaften, da ich mich schon muede fuehlte und der Wind noch staerker blies. Ich fand einen ruhigeren Platz mit 3 anderen Kuenstlern, und obwohl die Szene nicht mein Uebliches war, fand ich es nach einer knappen Stunde sehr befriedigend.

However, less than an hour later I was very satisfied with my little painting.

After the end of the day this is may display wall at the gallery at Eldora. The painting in the gold frame was one of my summer efforts on Canal Street. I am very proud of today's efforts.

Canaveral Seashore Paintout - Day 1 Welcome

Finally it has started!
We had registration, orientation and scheduling on Sunday afternoon. I have lived in this area for almost 19 years, and have never gone down to this National Park! It is quite a drive, I must say, but very nice. Lots of wildlife (racoons and armadillos, eagles, dolphins, manatees, etc), and palms. And mosquitoes!!!!
This morning the mayor of New Smyrna Beach welcomed us at Eldora House and announced the start of the weeklong event.
Endlich hat es angefangen! Nach kurzer Orientation und Anmeldung am Sonntag nachmittag hiess uns der Buergermeister von New Smyrna Beach willkommen. Obwohl ich schon fast 20 Jahre hier wohne, habe ich diesen Nationalen Park noch nie besucht. Es gibt vor allem viele Palmen, und Wildtiere: Waschbaeren, Guerteltiere, Adler, Dolphine, Manatees, und ein Haufen Schnaken!

Then the 26 artists dispersed and decided on a place for the morning session. Some of the artists had already started very early to do a beach sunset painting. The central point of Eldora features a map with pins of artists' painting locations, so guests and visitors can find a particular artist. We also were allowed to hang one painting so our walls wouldn't be bare for the first day.
Heute war es sehr windig, doch noch ziemlich warm und wolkenlos. Es koennte nicht besser sein. Alle 26 Kuenstler markierten ihren Malplatz auf einer zentralen Landkarte, wo uns dann die Besucher finden und besuchen konnten. Ich hatte ziemlich viele geschwaetzige Touristen, was mir jedoch nicht viel ausmacht. Man lernt immer viele nette Leute kennen...

The day was blustery with warm sunshine, cool shade and breezy wind off the lagoon. We had quite a few visitors, which was great!

Meine Gemaelde werde ich im naechsten Post vorzeigen, da hier unser Zeitplan fuer die Woche ist.

Today: painting at the Park.
Tuesday: painting at the Park.
Wed/Thu: painting downtown New Smyrna Beach, at Canal St and/or Flagler Ave, or at the Park.
Thu evening: painting the sunset at JB's Fishcamp.
Fri: painting at the Park.
Sat: morning painting, gala/reception in the evening. Tickets available for $25 advance/$35 at the door. Ticket purchase goes towards purchase of painting. The gala is at Eldora House.

I am out of my element painting in the park, as there is pure nature and way too many trees LOL. However today's results made me very comfortable and I am looking forward to the days in the park, however more to downtown NSB. As I have painted at Canal St. already 3-4 times this year, I will try Flagler Ave. I also look forward to the sunset painting. We will all be at the same spot, painting the same sunset. Should get very interesting. Plus, the sun sets so quickly here, we have less than half an hour to get the colors!
Das Malen im Park ist etwas "Neues" fuer mich, da es Natur pur ist, und viel zu viele Baeume! Haha, ihr wisst ja, dass ich lieber Haeuser und Boote malen. Ich fand meine Gemaelde von heute jedoch sehr gelungen, und werde mehr "landschaftsmaessiges" in den naechsten Tagen malen. Am Donnerstag abend treffen wir uns alle an einem Restaurant am Fluss, bei der Lagune, wo wir alle am selben Platz den Sonnenuntergang malen werden. Da die Sonne hier schnell untergeht, haben wir weniger als 30 Min. dafuer. Das wird interessant werden!

Beyond the Alley

I did a quick practice piece tonight from one of my vacation photos. This was an alley shot in Rothenburg, Germany. I liked how the foreground was in shadow, highlighting the sunkissed house fronts in the background.
Heute abend malte ich schnell was zum Ueben im Studio. Es ist ein Photo von Rothenburg von unserem Urlaub dieses Jahr. Ich fand die sonnenbeleuchteten Haueser im Hintergrund vor allem schoen, wie sie von den Hauesern im Schatten im Vordergrund umrahmt werden.

I only used 4 colors: yellow ochre, indian red, black and white. Which strictly is just 2 colors, as black and white aren't "colors". The sky appears as a nice muted blue, it's mixed from black and white, and shows up blue because there is so much red in the surrounding color patches, and because black is essentially a very dark blue. You can also see how the shadows hold the piece together and from the start make the scene recognizable, without any details or color!
Ich benutzte nur 4 Farben: Ockergelb, Indisch Rot, Schwarz und Weiss (die zusammen blau geben, da sie von so viel rot umrahmt sind, und da Schwarz sowieso nur ein sehr dunkles Blau ist). Man kann auch sehen, wie die Schatten das Bild zusammenhalten und sogar schon von Anfang an ohne Details eine gute Idee geben, was es sein soll!

I am pretty satisfied with it, especially since it took me less than an hour from start to finish. I feel ready for next week's painting at Canaveral Seashore! Watch for more posts!
Ich bin sehr zufrieden damit, besonders da es weniger als 'ne Stunde gedauert hat. Nun fuehle ich mich total "ready" fuer das Malereignis naechste Woche. Viele mehr emails werden kommen! Bis dann...

Plein Air Paintout coming up fast!

My radio interview happened on Tuesday morning at 8:20am. It was only about 1-2 minutes, where I could talk about my painting and participation in the Paintout coming up in less than 2 weeks. Unfortunately I cannot attach the file of the interview that my boyfriend recorded for me, so I am going to send it as a separate email. If you don't get it, please let me know and I'll send it to you again.

Fall is in the air, today we had a wonderful 80° with a nice breeze. I went to the Canal Street Art Walk in New Smyrna Beach this morning and produced a very satisfactory painting. I am very happy with it!

Endlich ist bei uns der Herbst eingezogen, wir hatten heute wundervolle 24 Grad mit einer schoenen Brise. Ich malte heute morgen wieder in New Smyrna Beach, und bin total zufrieden diesesmal mit meiner Produktion!

I stood on a street corner that had quite a strong wind, and painted the restaurant across the street. People were enjoying their morning coffee outside, but I am not doing people (yet) LOL. We had lots of visitors this day, good responses and lots of interest. Very enjoyable.

Another painting opportunity last Saturday at the Harris House by the River. We had several plein air artists, even though it was still very very hot and humid. I found a shady place in the garden of Clay Gallery with several other artists, and I painted the tree beyond the fence. The street scene behind it was very busy, so I left it out. Big mistake! Another lessen learned: Don't make up stuff that's not there! Next time I rather attempt the real scene with its business, than making up a simpler scene...

Ich hatte wieder eine Chance zum Malen letzten Samstag in New Smyrna Beach am Fluss. Es waren etliche Kuenstler dort, und wir fanden einen schattigen Malplatz in dem Garten einer kleinen Gallerie.

Ich liess die komplizierte Strassen-Szene hinter dem Zaun aus und malte eine einfachere Erfindung stattdessen, was mir ueberhaupt nicht gefaellt, nun da es fertig ist. Wieder 'ne neue Erfahrung: Lieber das echte malen, egal wie kompliziert es ist, als was zu erfinden...

Ich freue mich, euch erzaehlen zu koennen, dass ich eine Einladung zu einem regionalen Mal-Ereignis bekommen und angenommen habe. 2011 Canaveral Seashore Paintout, 24.-29. Oktober. Es werden 26 Kuenstler auf den Strassen und am Meer von New Smyrna Beach malen, ein kleiner vertrauemter Ort suedlich von Daytona Beach. In addition, the interview I had in Germany was finally printed after a major strike of the local newspapers there. See picture. It is about my artwork, how I got into plein air, and why I like to paint Florida scenery in addition to the scenes from Germany.

Ich moechte auch hinzufuegen, dass der Zeitungsreport endlich gedruckt wurde in den "Fraenkischen Nachrichten", fuer den ich waehrend unseres Urlaubs interviewt wurde. Es ging ueber meine Kunst, das Plein Air Malen, und die Unterschiede des Malens von deutschen und Floridianischen Szenen. Sehr ausfuehrlich und interessant.

Ahhh, plein air again! It felt much better and I am so much better pleased with the results than the studio painting. I met with Irene at the New Smyrna Beach Canal Street Art Walk on Saturday morning. It was cool enough in the shade to be real pleasant to produce a painting. We had lots of fun, and several friends stopped by to say hello. The event was well-visited.

Ahh, endlich wieder Plein Air Malerei am Wochenende! Ich fuehlte mich viel besser mit dem Endresultat, und das Malen war auch schoener, mit Irene und einigen Freuden, die bei uns vorbeischauten.

Finally I had time to start another painting. This is in-studio, from one of my photos in Germany. I tried to use my plein air style (all prima, done in less than 2 hours in one sitting), but I am not too satisfied with it. I find it really hard to paint from a photo/computer printout now. It just doesn't give you enough information... Oh well.

Endlich mal wieder ein Gemaelde von mir! Im Atelier in weniger als 2 Stunden gemalt, doch da es vom Photo war, finde ich es nicht supergut gelungen. Es ist echt schwer, vom Photo zu malen, nun da ich mich an die Plein Air Malerei gewoehnt habe, wo man an Ort und Stelle alle Information hat.

Trip to Germany - lots of pictures!

Hello everybody!!!!

We are back in the States after visiting my family in Germany for 12 days. It was great, we had wonderful weather, and took a lot of pictures (like 2500!). I intend to use some of them to produce studio paintings in the near future.

My kids, my sister and her sons, and my dad.

We met with my whole family at my dad's 70th birthday party, and visited many cities, looking at castles, churches and museums, and drank lots of beer.

The local brass band played some songs at my dad's birthday party (my whole family is very active in the local music scene, both traditional brass band and also cover bands), and the rest of the day was spent eating, eating and more eating... Leberkloesslesuppe, Venison, Black Forest Cake, and more!

We went to Munich for 2 days and visited the city, churches, beer gardens, the concentration camp in Dachau, and met with one of my high school friends.

Back home we went to the public swimming pool in Wuerzburg, where my kids jumped off the 10m (30') diving tower. We also visited the townhall in my hometown of Wittighausen, where my paintings are displayed. The town recently purchased all 5 of them as a set, yeah! I also was interviewed about my art and life in the USA by a reporter of a local newspaper, will post the article when it comes out in a few weeks.

A visit to Wuerzburg, where I went to high school. The famous view from the bridge with St. Kilian's statue to the castle Marienburg, and a view inside the main church, the Dom.

While visiting the castle, we met some local clubs in traditional costume that shot muskets from the castle walls above the city, to commemorate St. Kilian's birthday which started the local fair downtown. How lucky were we! It was awesome!

On one of the last days we visited Rothenburg, a small town with the fortified walls around its center still intact and walkable all the way around. It is very quaint and picturesque. Below a sampling.

Some interesting notes: Gas was $9/gallon! We had a small Renault which we only gassed up once (thank God!), and pushed up to 175kmh (110 mph) on the Autobahn, while being passed by Mercedes and BMWs. Driving on the autobahn is very strenuous because of the tightness of traffic, the speed, and the curviness and small size of the lanes. Driving on the small roads between towns is like driving a go-cart: in a small car, curvy, and fast - fun!

Beer is about the same price as water in the restaurants, and there are usually no refills. We ate a lot of bread, rolls and sausages - yum! We also did a lot of walking, so nobody gained a pound! There are a lot of beer gardens, and cafes where you can sit outside and enjoy the sunshine. Most people speak English, especially the young generation. During the summer, each little town has several festivals with big beer tents, and music. We were lucky enough to visit two of them and see my cousin Dominik perform with his band Lost Eden.

Good morning! I haven't posted in a while, but have some thoughts and interesting items to share.

Guten Morgen, ich habe schon lange nichts mehr von mir hoeren lassen, hier sind ein paar Neuigkeiten...

>>It has been too hot to paint outside, so I am still working on this studio painting "Getting Ready" (20x16). I seem to take forever on the paintings that are a bit larger and that I do from a photo at home. Nevertheless, it's almost done. The horse needs a bit more paint, but that's it. Die Florida Sommer sind viel zu heiss zum Plein Air Malen, doch ich arbeite in meinem Studio an diesem Gemaelde (siehe oben). Meine Studiowerke dauern viel viel laenger als wenn ich an Ort und Stelle bin, doch ich hoffe, dass es irgendwann dieses Jahr fertig wird - haha.

Blue House and Class

Another class yesterday with 2 students. We met on Palmetto Ave by the Art League in downtown Daytona Beach. There are many beautiful old houses there, and we did find a shady spot. It was unbearably hot, but we all did very well and had lots of fun.

Ein Malkurs gestern mit zwei Schuelerinnen. Wir trafen uns bei grosser Hitze in einem alten Stadtteil von Daytona Beach.

As you can see on the photo above, my palette was VERY limited. I only used White, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Yellow, and Naples Yellow.

Wie man obig sieht, habe ich nur 3 Farben verwendet, und doch ist das Bild sehr farbenfroh und sonnig.

My first real painting course

Sorry I haven't posted in quite a while. I finally caved in and accepted some students upon several requests. Our first outing was on Saturday morning in Ponce Inlet where it was nice and breezy, and a hot rod show nearby with music and lots of visitors (great timing LOL).

Nach vielem Draengen von etlichen Bekannten und Kuenstlern habe ich nun endlich zugesagt, offizielle Malstunden abzuhalten, und am Samstag war mein erster Malkurs. Wir trafen uns in Ponce Inlet am Morgen, wo eine schoene Brise vom Meer her wehte.

After walking around for a while looking for inspiration, I let my students pick a subject, which of course is one of the hardest - a boat! All those curves and rigging! Here is our setup with our easels, ready to go.

Nach einem kurzen Spaziergang einigten wir uns auf unser erstes Subjekt - ein Boot (eines der schwersten Dinge zu malen! All die Kurven und Seile! Hier sind unsere Staffeleien, los geht's!

My students, eager to learn and sling around some paint! I gotta get me a hat - too cool! Oh, and first lesson: don't paint with sunglasses! Meine Schuelerinnen, die mit Volldampf die Farben attackieren und zur selben Zeit eine tolle Hutshow auffuehren! Und erste Lektion: nicht mit Sonnenbrille malen!

I painted alongside, so I could explain my process and thoughts while solving the painting on my own. Above is my underpainting, getting the main elements and shadows in. Below we are almost halfway done.

Ich malte auch mit, so dass ich auf praktische Art und Weise meinen Prozess zeigen konnte. Oben mein Untergemaelde mit den Hauptelementen und Schatten, unten sind wir fast fertig.

Here is my painting in front of our subject, as I finished it after about 2 hours. Everybody did really well, and they told me that not only did they have fun, but they also learned something! That was very nice to hear, because I really enjoyed it immensely. We are definitely going to do it again soon.

Hier ist mein Gemaelde vor dem Subjekt, als ich es nach ca. 2 Stunden zur Vollendung brachte. Wir alle produzierten ein tolles Gemaelde, und meine Schuelerinnen sagten mir, dass sie viel Spass hatten, und auch sehr viel lernten! I painted with 2 other artists yesterday at Ames Park in Ormond Beach. It was very very hot and humid, but there was a breeze right by the river and we selected a shady spot. This is an old coquina house by the Halifax river, with many elegant palms in the adjoining park.

I used my regular limited palette of 3 colors plus white: Ultramarine blue, Burnt Sienna, and Cad. Yellow medium. Oh, and a touch of Naples Yellow. Okay, 4 colors...

Gestern malte ich mit 2 anderen Kuenstlern in Ormond Beach am Fluss. Es war sehr heiss und schwuel, doch zum Glueck fanden wir einen schattigen Platz zum Malen, und vom Fluss wehte eine schoene Brise zu uns. Dies ist ein altes Haus aus Coquina-Muscheln gebaut, mit vielen eleganten Palmen im benachbarten Park. Ich benutzte meine limitierte Palette mit 4 Farben plus Weiss.

Another glorious spring day, and I could spend it with fellow artists at the second Downtown Arts District Gallery Walk Saturdayin New Smyrna Beach. This time I positioned myself about two blocks up the road from the last time in March, and painted an alley where the sun was creating wonderful purple shadows. And it had cables and wires stretching across the street! - what could be better! I even attacked a bigger panel this time, 14x11! Yeah.

Wieder mal ein toller Fruehlingstag, und ich konnte den Nachmittag mit anderen Kuenstlern in New Smyrna Beach verbringen. Diesesmal malte ich eine Gasse ein paar Strassenbloecke weiter oben vom letztenmal, wo die Sonne tolle Schattenspiele auffuehrte. Und die Szene hatte sogar Draehte und Kabel - was koennte besser sein! Und ich malte sogar auf einem groesseren Panel, 36cm x 28cm, yeah!

My beginning (I forgot to take a picture of the initial sketch, sorry) with some colors. It always is a great moment when you start laying in the cool blue sky colors on top of that burnt sienna underpainting! Wow!

Mein Anfang mit ein paar Farben, leider vergass ich, ein Bild von meiner anfaenglichen Skizze zu machen. Es ist immer ein toller Moment, wenn man die kuehlen Blautoene des Himmels auf die braune Untermalung aufmalt. Wow!

First Saturday Gallery Walk in NSB

Today I joined other artists for the first First Saturday Gallery Walk on Canal St. in New Smyrna Beach. The weather was beautiful, there was a live band on the next street corner, and I met a lot of nice fellow artists, and lots of visitors too.

I painted a little street scene, looking into the afternoon sun. I like backlit scenes, and I am very happy how this little one turned out. I also handed out lots of business cards, so altogether, a very nice and productive afternoon!

Heute nahm ich am ersten Samstag-Gallerien-Spaziergang in New Smyrna Beach teil. Das Wetter was super (ca. 24 Grad und ueberhaupt nicht schwuel), eine Band spielte live, und ich traf viele nette Kuenstler und Besucher. Ich malte eine kleine Strassenszene, in die Sonne schauend, was immer ein tolles Licht gibt. Ich teilte auch viele meiner Visitenkarten aus, und da mein Bild sehr gut ausfiel, fand ich, dass ich den Nachmittag sehr gut verbracht hatte!

My first plein air (painted at the site) painting today with Pat! We met at the river in Holly Hill and while she painted a boat, I turned 180 degrees and painted one of these nice pine trees with the crooked and twisted branches.

Mein erstes Gemaelde an Ort und Stelle (Plein Air)! Waehrend Pat eine Bootszene am Fluss in Holly Hill malte, drehte ich mich zur Strasse und malte einen dieser tollen Tannenbaeume, die zackige und verkorkste Aeste haben.

Since I left out the gardens and houses, it looks like a scene from a riverbank. It also helped to put a tiny reflection of the main trees into the area that originally was the street, so now it looks like water/river. I like it that way.

Da ich die Gaerten und Haueser ausgelassen habe, sieht es mehr wie eine Flusszene aus. Es half auch, dass ich ein paar kleine Reflektionen der Baeume in den unteren Teil, der eigentlich die Strasse war, gemalt habe, so dass es nun wirklich wie Wasser und ein Fluss aussieht. Gefaellt mir besser so.

Well, I am sure getting into these pet portraits! Last night I finished a gift for my neighbors who have been so good to me ever since I've moved to their neighborhood about 15 years ago. Their two poodles passed away in the last couple of months, they both lived to be over 15 years! JJ is the boy on the left, he only had 3 legs, but really always had this mischievous look on his face. CC is the one on the right, quite a lady. I can't wait to give it to my friends when it's dry!

Wow, ich bin wirklich in diese Tierportraits verliebt! Gestern abend malte ich ein Geschenk fuer meine Nachbarn, die so so nett sind. Ihre zwei Pudel, die beide ueber 15 Jahre alt waren, starben innerhalb der letzten paar Monate, und ich wollte ihnen ein Gemaelde schenken. JJ ist der Junge links, er hat nur drei Beine, war aber immer frech, wie man sieht. CC war eine kleine Lady, siehe rechts.

It was a lot of fun to paint, even though I only had a couple of not-so-great snapshots to work from. I put the dogs into a warm burnt sienna background, with a warm light on their white coats. That makes the whole painting glow and gives an overall friendly look. It is most important to NOT paint every single hair, but make broad brushstrokes to give the IMPRESSION of the tangled, curly fur. You can follow the hair pattern with the direction of the brush strokes. This method makes the painting much more interesting and gives it a painterly, impressionistic look.

Es hat viel Spass gemacht, die beiden Kerlchen zu malen, obwohl die Referenzphotos viel zu wuenschen uebrig hatten. Ich malte die Hunde vor einem warmen Hintergrund, mit warmem Licht auf ihrem Fell, so dass alles freundlich und nett aussieht. Am wichtigsten ist, nicht jedes einzelne Haar zu malen, sondern mit der Richtung und dem Druck der Pinselstriche den EINDRUCK von Fell und Haaren zu erreichen. Das wirkt viel malerischer und interessanter, und gibt einen impressionistischen Eindruck.

today I am going to do something different and feature one of my good artist friends, Terry Webb. She is a very talented artist from New Smyrna Beach who does very colorful nature and wildlife paintings in lots of media. Please take a look at her website here.

Recently she has added another website where she sells hats that feature a lovely embroidered turtle based on one of her paintings. It was inspired by a personal issue with cancer, please read her touching story here and get the details about purchasing. Terry says: "I will be donating 10% of the profits for each hat sold on this site directly to people faced with the financial burden of needing cancer treatment. Helping people to afford groceries, medication, paying bills etc. is the plan."

Morning Calm

Today I attacked the second painting, a commission, that has been sitting on my easel since before the new year. I worked almost 3 hours on this, since it was a bit too chilly and way too cloudy to go out doing plein air, as I had originally planned. I am very satisfied with how far I got today. Following are some of the first steps.

Heute fing ich das zweite Gemaelde (einen Malauftrag) an, das seit Jahreswende auf meiner Staffelei sitzt. Ich wollte eigentlich draussen plein air malen, doch es war ein bisschen kuehl, und zu bedeckt. Ich bin sehr zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis meiner 3 Stunden intensivster Malerei. Hier sind die ersten Schritte.

I started with several blue hues for the sky, brushed in white with some red for the clouds to give it some warmth, and then developed the main shadows. I left off with the small boat in the middle almost finished, the other boats' main bodies are done, but the detailed roping and masts are just indicated. I don't like to paint the sky/background first, and then the main subjects, because it always looks pasted on. I rather "interweave" the colors, so they blend and smudge into each other. That makes the background and foreground one cohesive unit, not two different subjects. That's why I started the tackle right away today, so I could blend it somewhat into the sky that was still wet. This is where I stand tonight, see below.

Ich fing mit verschiedenen Blautoenen an, malte dann die Wolken mit Weiss und etwas Rot, um sie aufzuwaermen, und dann die Hauptschatten. Ich hoerte auf, als das mittlere, kleine Boot ziemich fertig war. So sieht das Gemaelde heute abend aus. Noch viel zu tun!

This commission, which is 24"x18", is from a photo I took on a glorious morning. I have painted this scene here in Port Orange many times on location - those shrimp boats take on a different character with each different weather condition. Below are the plein air scenes from last year:

Diesen Auftrag (45cm x 61cm) male ich von einem Photo, das ich an einem herrlichen Morgen geschossen hatte. Die Szene von hier in Port Orange habe ich schon oefters gemalt an Ort und Stelle - diese Shrimp-Boote nehmen mit jeder Wetterlage einen verschiedenen Charakter an. Hier sind die Plein Air Gemaelde vom letzten Jahr.

It really helps painting the same scene many times, and doing it plein air also helps to interpret a photo much better, which usually doesn't show shadows correctly, and gives only limited information regarding colors in general.

Es hilf sehr, dieselbe Szene oefters zu malen, und vor allem, live to malen (an Ort und Stelle), denn ein Photo gibt doch sehr limitierte Information ueber Schatten und Farben.

My first painting in 2011 is one I started in the summer of last year ;-(

Well, it's finally finished, our dog Gunner, a mix of Hound and German Pointer. He's almost 3 years old, and rescued him from the Humane Society about 2 years ago. He can sit like royalty as shown, whenever he's not jumping around like crazy LOL.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Well, here we are in the last days of 2010. If 2009 was the year of plein air painting for me (47 completed in those 12 months), then 2010 was the year of commissions. I completed the church series (5 large oil paintings) for my hometown of Unterwittighausen, then did the teaparty paintings for a local client, one plein air for my parents when they were here, a skateboard, a small watercolor just recently, a zebra portrait, and a couple of days ago I started a large seascape for my very good German friends who recently moved out of the area. Additionally to those 11 commissioned paintings I also completed 20 plein air paintings and did an official demo at a local art club! I am posting the three paintings that are on my easel right now.

Okay, hier sind wir in den letzten Tagen des alten Jahres, und ich wollte meine Malerfolge aufzaehlen. So wie 2009 das Jahr fuer Plein Air Malen fuer mich war (47 Gemaelde an Ort und Stelle gemalt), war 2010 das Jahr fuer Auftraege. Ich fing mit den 5 Kirchengemaelden fuer meine Heimatgemeinde Wittighausen an, dann die Teeparty fuer eine lokale Klientin, ein Plein Air fuer meine Eltern, ein Skateboard, ein kleines Aquarell, das Zebraportrait, und vor einigen Tagen fing ich ein grosses Hafengemaelde fuer meine deutschen Freunde an, obig gezeigt in der Mitte als Untermalung, mit 2 anderen, die ich gerade auf meiner Staffelei habe. Im Zusatz zu diesen 11 Gemaelden stellte ich auch noch 20 Plein Air Gemaelde her und malte ein Demo-Gemaelde in einem Kunstclub! Nicht schlecht, gell?

I finished another commission this week, a zebra portrait for a good friend of mine. They have lots of horses, and also a zebra! It was a pleasure to paint those cool stripes, and to experiment with a little more abstract stuff for the background. My friend was very pleased with the final result. Attached a couple of the steps and the final picture.

Habe diese Woche wieder mal einen Mal-Auftrag fertiggestellt, ein Zebraportrait fuer eine guten Freund. Er hat einige Pferde, und tatsaechlich auch ein Zebra im Stall! Es war supertoll, die Streifen nachzuvollziehen, und auch mal einen abstrakten Hintergrund zu malen. Mein Kunde war sehr erfreut mit dem Endergebnis.

At the Rose Garden

This afternoon I went with my kids to the event at the Rose Garden in downtown Daytona. It was beautiful weather, and we had some people working, weeding, and making new stepping stones. Kirsten and Billy were hard at work weeding and beautifying the area along with the DIG volunteers, while I did a painting looking towards the fire station on Orange Ave. Mark joined me later doing his own painting, and Pat stopped by for a visit too. Thanks to my other friends who visited for a while!

Heute nachmittag waren meine Kinder und ich im Rosengarten in Daytona Beach, wo einige Leute zusammenkamen und den Garten jaeteten, umpflanzten, und einfach gesellig waren. Ich malte die Szene zum Feuerhaus hin, und meine Malfreunde Mark und Pat kamen auch spaeter fuer einen Sprung vorbei.

Painting event in Downtown Daytona Nov 14

Gregg Kreutz Workshop - Day 3

Gregg started the last day at the marina with a demo of some boats sitting at the dock. It was quite breezy and warm, with the sun hiding periodically behind spectacular clouds. He painted on the board of the first demo that he had scraped down - we were all pretty upset, it was so nice ;-(

Afterwards he let us loose again and we painted till lunch, most of us staying at the marina, painting something similar, and after lunch we painted again, while he went around on his bicycle visiting everyone at their different spots and offering insight and critiques. All around it was an awesome learning experience, and if anybody has the chance, sign up for his workshops.

He said he was planning on doing a mixed workshop (still life, portrait and plein air) around Feb 2011 in Mt. Dora again. He also signed my book (Problem Solving for Oil Painters by Gregg Kreutz), which is an excellent book all around - I can only recommend it. In addition he let us read some excerpts from the new plein air book he is currently working on. Looks like a good one already! Thanks, Gregg!!!!!!

My Workshop Paintings!

Okay, here I am showcasing the paintings I did during the Kreutz workshop. I completed 2 paintings per day, and only one was a dud (I'm not showing it!). I am very pleased with all my efforts, and let me tell you, it was a tour de force! Doing 2 paintings a day for 3 days is really exhausting. But also fun!!!!!

Hier sind die Gemaelde, die ich waehrend des Kreutz Workshop's angefertigt habe. 2 Gemaelde pro Tag, also sechs insgesamt, wovon nur eines nicht vorzeigbar ist. Ich bin total zufrieden mit was ich gelernt habe, und wieviel ich an den 3 Tagen gemalt habe. Es machte soviel Spass!

After Gregg's 3rd demo I painted the famous Donelly house, which appears on probably hundreds of artists' canvases. I focused on the morning light hitting the front of the house. I went bigger than my usual canvas size this time. This was done in about one hour. I am again very pleased with it.

Gregg Kreutz Workshop - Day 2

On Day Two we met early for another demo, this time Gregg painted a sidewalk scene. The sidewalk was going down, then after a dip back up. Also, the sky was cloudy and the sun was coming and going - very difficult. He focused on a swath of light at the far end of the buildings, and really pulled it together. We were all fascinated.

Gregg Kreutz Workshop - Day 1

I am in Mt. Dora this week for a 3-day workshop with artist Gregg Kreutz! It is such an honor, and he is the nicest, most humble, and personable teacher, while being a wonderful and gifted artist. Diese Woche bin ich in Mt. Dora, um an einem Workshop mit Gregg Kreutz teilzunehmen. www.greggkreutz.com Er ist ein toller Lehrer und sehr talentierter Kuenstler. Er lehrt in der Student Art League in NYC. Ich denke, die Bilder sprechen fuer sich, und die wenigen Deutschen Leser, die echt am technischen Detail interessiert sind, koennen das Englische verstehen.... Tut mir leid, keine Uebersetzungen diesesmal. Ich habe jeden Tag 2 Bilder gemalt, waehrend Gregg 2 Demos am Tag gelehrt hat. Ich werde meine eigenen Gemaelde im 4. Blogpost zeigen, also Geduld...

Day One Gregg started with a demo in the morning, just setting up on the sidewalk and painting a street scene. With his gracious permission I am posting some of his progress shots, and some things we learned.

Gregg is a fast painter, and can (and will) make things up on the fly, and they always work! He blocks in on a slightly toned panel ("Innerglow" panels) with a papertowel and burnt sienna, just indicating anything that's not sky.

He then develops the main area and / or main colors, and just goes from there. Note that the sky goes from white+yellow to blue.

Above is the next step, big shapes going into detail. He has a finished painting in the first 30 minutes. He then fiddles around with a palette knife and smaller brushes to develop more details and little flecks of highlights (not shown here, he actually scraped this first demo down and painted over it on Day 3...).

After each demo, which lasted about 1-1.5 hours each, he let us loose and we painted, sometimes the same scene, sometimes any of the other great scenes around this lovely town.

I painted an alley way near the Arts Center in the morning, and then his same scene of the train station of the afternoon. I am very very pleased with both my efforts, which I am going to show in a separate blog post later...

A little commission

I was asked to finish this tribute to a local skateboarder that the original artist never finished. It is his portrait painted on a skateboard. I had to add the neck, shirt, clouds and writing. The customer was very, very happy with it.

Ich bekam einen kleinen Auftrag, ein Skateboard mit dem Portrait des jungen Mannes fertigzustellen, da der Kunde mit der originalen Kuenstlerin nicht zufrieden war. Ich malte den Hals, Shirt, Wolken und Text dazu. Der Kunde war sehr, sehr begeistert.

This morning I set up at Sun Splash Park at the beach with Pat and Mark. It was a beautiful start of the day, and we had lots of people there, setting up their chairs and spots for the coming air show. I painted the Main Street Pier in the distance, with the waves coming in beautifully.

Heute morgen malten Pat, Mark, und ich in einem Park am Strand. Es waren viele Leute da, die ihre Stuehle und Decken aufsetzten, um einen guten Platz fuer die spaetere Air-Show zu bekommen. Ich malte die Main Street Pier im Hintergrund, mit hohen Wellen, die an den ruhigen Strand spuelten. Wie ihr seht, haben wir immer noch tolles Wetter, jedoch weniger Schwuele, zum Glueck!

I worked on the demo painting from last Friday, and added some flags, wires (anybody who knows me knows that I love wires in paintings!), and people. I'll let it sit for a while to see if I need to add anything else... I like it now.

Ich malte ein paar neue Sachen in mein Demo-Gemaelde vom letzten Freitag: einige Fahnen/Flaggen, Draehte (jeder, der mich kennt, weiss, dass ich gerne Leitungen und Draehte in Gemaelden habe!), und ein paar Leute. Werde es fuer ein paar Tage sitzenlassen, bis ich sehe, ob es auch nun wirklich sonst nichts mehr braucht... Aber ich mag es bis jetzt.

Painting Demo in DeLand

A few weeks ago I was asked to do a demo at the art league in DeLand for their monthly meeting. Today I went there and painted an oil painting from one of my photos in front of the assembled members. It was a lot of fun, and I believe that everybody got something out of it. I enjoyed it very much, and was able to talk and teach and answer questions while producing a finished painting in a little over an hour.

Vor einigen Wochen wurde ich angefragt, ob ich eine Maldemonstration fuer die Mitglieder des Kunstclubs in DeLand machen wuerde. Heute nachmittag fand die Demo statt, und ich malte ein groesseres Gemaelde von einem meiner Photos vor der versammelten Mitgliedschaft (ca. 13 Personen). Es machte viel Spass, und ich glaube, dass jeder was Gutes davon mitheimtragen konnte. Ich konnte tatsaechlich fast nonstop sprechen und lehren und Fragen beantworten, waehrend ich was ziemlich tolles produzierte.

Here is the progression of my steps, from underpainting of shadows, to highlights and addition of colors. I painted with 3 colors plus white on a 14"x11" masonite board.

Tranquil Waters

Here's a little 5x7 from the Daytona Marina this morning. The sun was hiding behind clouds and peeked out once in a while, so I decided to just do a small one to get it down quickly. It was hot and steamy by the water, but I'm glad we got out again to paint.

Hier ist ein kleines Bildchen vom Bootsanlegeplatz in Daytona. Es war sehr heiss und schwuel, und die Sonne versteckte sich oefters, deswegen nahm ich das kleinere Format, um die Szene schneller einzufangen.

At The Lighthouse

One of the nice things with the bad economy is that since my work hours are cut, I get to go out more to paint. I met Mark in Ponce Inlet and together we painted some of the houses and buildings surrounding the lighthouse. After an initial downpour we had great weather and came home with some pretty good efforts.

Here is Mark with his GoBox Easel, while I am using my own setup/self-made pochade box.

Eines der guten Seiten der schlechten Wirtschaftslage ist, dass ich durch meine verkuerzten Arbeitsstunden mehr zum malen komme. Heute malte ich mit Mark in Ponce Inlet, einige der Gebaeude, die den Leuchtturm dort umgeben. Nach einem tollen Regenguss kam die Sonne raus und wir konnten beide mit guten Gemaelden heimkehren.

Drastic changes

Thanks to everybody for the comments on my latest painting and the votes. I agreed that the palm tree had to go, so here is the final fixed version, with the tree on the right having better foliage, too. I really like it now and it's definitely framable!

Vielen Dank fuer die vielen Kommentare und Ideen. Ich fand nun auch nach einigem Ueberlegen, dass die Palme nicht gut sass, und habe sie gestern abend uebermalt, und auch den Baum rechts ein bisschen verbessert. Nun ist das Bild echt toll und kann in einen Rahmen kommen.

Usually I don't go home and fiddle or fix a painting, but since I had the brushes out, I also looked at the boat painting I did last weekend and decided to overpaint that a bit too. I still struggled with the canvas texture, but I punched up the values, and unified the colors. The coloring is better now, but the composition is still lacking. The boat sits dead center, the horizon line is boring and pretty much in the middle, 2 big no-no's - so this one is going in the sketch pile.

Normalerweise male ich nie an einem Bild weiter, das ich draussen anfing, doch da ich nach der obigen Reparatur noch in der Stimmung war, uebermalte ich das Bootgemaelde von letzter Woche ein bisschen. Die Tonwerte sind nun kraeftiger, die Farben ein bisschen uebereinstimmend, doch leider ist die Komposition nicht besser: das Boot total in der Mitte des Bildformats, die Horizontlinie ist langweilig und auch in der Mitte, 2 grosse Fehler. Dieses Bild wird keinen Rahmen kriegen...

Just wanted to point out that when you paint plein air, there is just so much to think about in the time frame of 1-2 hours, that not every effort is a winner. We had heat, good conversation, some interested people, limited time frame, sun going in and out. You have to choose your colors, brushes, and make decisions about values, colors, placement etc. It also shows, that even though the colors and values are right, if the composition/placement is boring, then nothing can bring that back...

Wenn man draussen malt, gibt es halt viel zu viele Stoerungen und zu viel zu ueberlegen, um alles richtig hinzukriegen. Und wenn die Komposition nicht gleich stimmt, dann koennen weder die richtigen Farben noch Tonwerte das Bild retten...

Gemini Springs II

I only worked half a day today, so on my way home I stopped at the park of Gemini Springs and painted the red barn next to the caretaker's house that I had painted last year in the summer. It was very hot and I had to stand in the full sun for the best view, but I believe it was worth it. I used my own smooth masonite panels, and ahh, what a difference. One of the groundskeepers stopped to take a peek and commented on how nice it was for me to use the park in such a way. A little over an hour, 5 colors plus white, 2 brushes used. I might do some "landscaping" and remove that very light palm tree in the center, I'll think about it for a couple of days,, not sure yet...

Heute durfte ich nur halbtags arbeiten, und zum Glueck hatte ich meine Malsachen im Kofferraum. Auf dem Heimweg fuhr ich in den Gemini Springs Park, wo ich letztes Jahr schon das alte Haus gemalt hatte. Nun kam die rote Scheune nebendort dran. Ich musste leider in der prallen heissen Sonne stehen, doch ich glaube, dass es das wert war. Ich malte auf meinem eigenen superglatten Malgrund, und ahh, was fuer ein Unterschied. Ich bin sehr zufrieden mit dem Gemaelde, und bekam auch schoene Komplimente von einem der Parkwaechter.

All Tied Up

Ahhh, finally back to plein air, the weather is "cooling down" a bit... I met a new painting buddy, Mark, and we went to my favorite spot at the Dunlawton Bridge. Mark is developing a new pochade box, which can be purchased here www.goboxeasel.com. I have tried it out on several occasions, and again this weekend, and I really like it. Very compact and fine to handle. He also gave me one of his panels with linen glued to it, and this is the second time I have tried them. I was fighting the weave and its property of sucking the oil right out of my paints again, and now I swear I will stick with gessoed masonite - that's it.

My painting therefore is not the best, also because we chatted quite a bit, and I helped with his own painting. That's my story - and I'm sticking to it!

Endlich wieder beim Malen, da nun das Wetter ein bisschen "kuehler" ist. Ich traf mich mit Mark, der eine neue Pochade Box entwickelt hat, und mich als Versuchskaninchen auserkoren hat. Ich mag seinen Kasten sehr, der hier www.goboxeasel.com zu erhalten ist. Leider probierte ich nun zum 2. Mal seine Boards mit Leinwand aus, was nicht meine Sache ist, und dementsprechend sieht auch mein Gemaelde aus... Ich werde von nun an nur noch Masonite verwenden, keine Leinwand! Die Faserung/Textur stoert mich sehr.

I wanted to share real quick something beautiful. I had some twigs that my teaparty-commission-client Marie had given me. I had them in a vase in my bedroom, and was disrupted in my sleep by rustling. It was caused by a butterfly emerging from its cocoon - right there in my room! Isn't he beautiful? I took him outside after taking the pictures.

Eine kleine schoene Geschichte: Meine Klientin der Teaparty, Marie, hatte mir einige Zweige mitheimgegeben, die ich in eine Vase setzte. Letzte Woche wurde mein Schlaf gestoert durch Rascheln. Es war ein Schmetterling, der sich in meinem Schlafzimmer entpuppte! Ist er nicht toll? Ich liess ihn dann nach draussen, nachdem ich ihn photographiert hatte.

Yesterday I delivered the painting to my client in New Smyrna Beach. Marie was very happy how it looked in her ornate gilded frame. I have to say, her house is the perfect place for this frame and the painting. She has decorated it herself, with mismatched antiques and European/Victorian-looking frills. There was something cute and gorgeous to discover in every corner of her house. It was absolutely adorable, and very nicely done.

Gestern lieferte ich das Gemaelde bei meiner Klientin ab. Ihr Haus war der perfekte Platz fuer das Bild und den Goldrahmen - sie hatte es selber dekoriert mit Europaeischem Flair (sie ist aus Daenemark), Flohmarkt-Fuenden und Antiquitaeten. Da gab es was neues und goldiges zu entdecken in jeder Ecke ihres Hauses.

Her garden was a perfect match with gorgeous plants, planters and statuettes.

Ihr Garten war genauso suess mit tollen Pflanzen, Kuebeln und Statuen.

Tada! Here it is! I finished skintones and faces last night and tonight. It was very hard to get the expressions, especially the boy. He is laughing real hard in the reference photo, but it was quite difficult to recreate. I settled on this, and after repainting the mouth about 4 times, I am quite pleased with it now and will leave it alone. The skin tones are great, especially on the girl's arms, they almost glow. Below some detail shots.

Jippie! Endlich bin ich fertig! Habe gestern und heute abend die Hauttoene fertiggemalt. Es war ziemlich schwer, die Gesichtsausdruecke hinzukriegen, vor allem am Jungen. Er lacht ziemlich gross im Photo, doch das war sehr schwer zu malen. Nachdem ich seinen Mund etwa 4x uebermalt hatte, bin ich nun damit zufrieden. Die Haut, vor allem die Arme des Maedchens, sind super, sie haben einen warmen Unterton, der fast glueht. Siehe unten ein paar Detail-Photos.

More Color!

Progress tonight. All elements are pretty much done, except the skin colors (faces and arms). Yeah! Now I can see the end result clearly in my mind, and it's looking pretty good. The tablecloth is especially nice, I think. The folds are made from different colors ranging from a pastel blue and green to mauve and purple, the highlights are white, offwhite, beige and nice yellow. The underpainting really helped and it's a pleasure to develop the colors on top of it.

Heute abend habe ich alle Farben fertiggemalt ausser den Hautflaechen. Nun kann ich endlich das vollendete Gemaelde klar vor mir sehen, da ich nun fast fertig bin, und bis jetzt bin ich sehr zufrieden. Das Tischtuch hat viele Pastelfarbtoene, sieht echt toll aus. Ich sehe, dass die Untermalung in schwarz und weiss wirklich viel hilft, es ist eine Freude, die Farben darueberzustreichen.

Hello again!

On top of the finished grisaille I rubbed some burnt sienna in oil paints yesterday to give it a more antique and warm look. Here you can see how I started this layer on the girl's face and the lamp. It clearly gives a warmer look than the stark black and white.

Gestern abend rieb ich Gebrannte Sienna Oelfarbe ueber die komplette Untermalung, um dem Bild einen waermeren Unterton zu geben. Man kann diese Schicht in der Lampe und dem Gesicht des Maedchens sehen.

Tonight I started glazing some colors on top. For this process you need mostly transparent paints so that the shadow and light parts of the grisaille will show through. For example, just by rubbing some thin red paint (Venetian red) over the girl's dress, you get the overall effect of light and dark with all the work done in the underpainting. For some of the highlights I added some more opaque white mixed with the local color. This process is very easy, since all the work has been done in black and white.

Heute fing ich an, Farben drueber zu glasieren oder einzureiben. Dafuer braucht man transparente Oelfarben, so dass die hellen und dunklen Toene der Untermalung durchscheinen. So hat man gleich Schatten und Licht, da alle "Arbeit" waehrend der Grisaille-Schicht in schwarz und weiss beendet wurde. Fuer Highlights male ich mit dickerer Farbe, die mit Weiss vermischt ist, drueber.
In this photo I am done in color with pretty much everything EXCEPT the boy's shirt, all skintones (faces and arms), the girl's hair, and the tablecloth. (Sorry for the glare on the dark background, it is hard to photograph dark oil colors.) The effect of the subtle glazing can be seen in the detail below.

Im obigen Photo kann man sehen, dass so ziemlich alles komplett in Farbe ist, AUSSER den Hauttoenen, den Haaren des Maedchens, dem Hemd des Jungen, und dem Tischtuch. (Leider ist der Hintergrund nicht gut zu erkennen, da es noch nass und so dunkel ist, was immer schwer ist, zu photographieren.) Im Detail unten koennt ihr den zarten Effekt der Glasur sehen.

Teaparty - Grisaille finished!

The grisaille (black and white underpainting) is finished! Well, except for that bundle of grapes on the table. I could not do the hands, try as I might. The reference photo was not very clear, the original glass was in front, and hands are very hard to do anyway... So I just painted a bunch of grapes and an apple in front of the hands. I will define them a bit more during the coloring stage which comes next. I am very happy with this painting right now. Next is the fun part - adding color!

Das Grisaille (schwarz-weisse Untermalung) ist vollendet! Nun, ausser fuer die Trauben auf dem Tisch, die ich hinzufuegen musste, da die Haende einfach nicht geklappt sind. Haende sind sehr schwer zu malen, und in diesem Fall sogar noch schwerer, da das Weinglas sie teilweise verdeckt hatte, und das Referenzphoto sowieso nicht so klar war. Nun habe ich eben ein paar Trauben und einen Apfel davorgemalt, die ich jedoch mehr detailliert machen werde, wenn ich nun endlich an die naechste Phase komme - Farben hinzufuegen! Bis dann... tschuess.

Painting in North Carolina!

Over the 4th of July weekend I went with my boyfriend to visit his family in NC again. While there I painted the creek down the road. Unfortunately the sun had left and it was very dark down in the valley. The kids went fishing and collected rocks, while I did this 8"x10" in about 1 hour. It's really hard to do rushing water, but I'm pretty happy with it.

Wir hatten Unabhaengigkeitstag (Fourth of July) dieses Wochenende, und mein Freund und ich besuchten seine Familie in North Carolina. Waehrend die Kinder angelten und Steine sammelten, malte ich den plaetschernden Bach im Tal. Leider war die Sonne hinter Wolken versteckt, und die Szene war ziemlich dunkel. Ich bin jedoch sehr zufrieden, denn fliessendes Wasser ist ziemlich schwer zu malen!

Last week I made some progress on the grisaille of the girl.

Tonight I finished the boy and some of the table. I am still debating if I should keep the glass in front of their hands, it is compositionally disturbing, and hey, I don't think kids are allowed to drink wine/champagne!

Heute abend kam der Junge und die Tischdecke dran. Ich ueberlege immer noch, ob das Glas vorne zu stoerend ist. Ich glaube, ich werde es auswischen.

950 years festival - recap

The festival was last weekend in Wittighausen. A lot was offered, camel rides, different foods to purchase, hobby and craft demonstrations, historical plays, etc. Almost every farm and house had something displayed on the sidewalk or in their barns. The weather was great and they had lots of visitors.

Commission - start of Grisaille

I started the girl's face on my "teaparty" commission. This is going to be the black and white grisaille value underpainting in oils, which I will glaze over later with some subdued colors. Couldn't work on it a lot, but at least it's a start...

Pat and I painted at the Dunlawton Bridge yesterday before noon. This is the 3rd or 4th time I am painting this old shrimp boat. It seems to have different companions next to it every time. We saw some dolphins playing and being chased by a pelican while painting. A very nice day...

Gestern malten Pat und ich an der Dunlawton Bridge in Port Orange. Dies ist nun das 3. oder 4. mal, dass ich das alte Shrimpboot dort male. Jedes mal scheint es ein anderes "Kumpelboot" zu haben, was die Szene interessant macht. Wir sahen einige Dolphine im Wasser spielen, und auch von einem Pelikan gejagt werden, waehrend des Malens - ein schoener Tag.

New Commission - Tea Party

Now that the commission for my hometown in Germany is finalized, I can start on my new commission for a local art patron. I started last night with the acrylic underpainting in burnt sienna. You can see the painting on the left on the easel, while the reference poster is pinned to the window on the right. The reference is a very old poster/print that has faded to just grayscale. The painting will be displayed in a gorgeous, elaborate gilded frame, so I am thinking of doing the painting in quiet colors. I will scontinue with an elaborate grisaille underpainting in oils (which is a grayscale study that focuses on getting the values, shadows and lights right), and then glaze over it in minimal colors to keep that vintage feel. We'll see how that will work out... This brown underpainting is just to get placement. Will keep you posted.

Da nun meine Kommission fuer Wittighausen vollendet ist, kann ich endlich meine neue Kommission fuer eine oertliche Kundin anfangen. Ich fing gestern abend an mit einer Untermalung in Gebrannter Sienna in Acryl. Dies hilft mir mit anfaenglicher Plazierung der Elemente. Mein Gemaelde ist links auf der Staffelei, das Referenzposter habe ich an mein Fenster im Studio geklebt. Die Referenz ist sehr alt und alle Farben sind durch das Alter geloescht. Da das Gemaelde in einen grossen goldenen Rahmen kommt, werde ich nicht allzuviel "laute" Farben benutzen. Ich denke mir, nach dieser losen Untermalung mit Oel in der Grisaille-Technik weiterzufahren. Grisaille ist eine sehr detaillierte Untermalung, die auf Licht und Schattierung fokusiert, worauf ich dann spaeter einfach mit ein paar Farben uebermalen kann, und somit hoffentlich das "alte" Feeling beibehalten kann. Mal sehen, wie's wird... Ich werde euch auf dem Laufenden halten.

Here you can see a picture of the greeting card set that is available now. The set consists of a nice cover sheet with the price (5 euros, about $6.50) with the thumbnails, and eight cards of the paintings. Those are the five churches I did recently, and three other scenes of the town I had painted in the last six years. It's a great collection and looks wonderful when framed with a mat. 950 Years Wittighausen

My parents landed safely back in Germany without any delays (remember the vulcanic ash cloud?). My dad went right to work and created a display wall for the originals they took with them for the festival in June. Here is my mom in the townhall in Unterwittighausen standing in front of it. It included a small bio of mine with a picture and ordering/sale information.

Meine Eltern sind sicher nach Deutschland zurueckgekommen und mein Vater machte sich gleich daran, eine freistehende Wand fuer die originalen Gemaelde zu fabrizieren. Hier ist meine Mutter im Rathaus vor der Wand-Ausstellung. Meine Bio und Verkaufsinformation sind auch enthalten. Meine Eltern koennen kontaktiert werden, um etwaige Kunstdrucke zum Rahmen hinter Glas zu bestellen. Alle Postkarten mit den 8 Motiven sind gedruckt und ueber meine Eltern und mehrere Laeden im Ort erhaeltlich.

Today I went out with my parents who are here from Germany to paint them a painting to take home. We went to a local creek and I tried out a box made by a local artist (more about that later - hi Mark! - works great!). The sun was out, and it was a typical spring day. Here is my dad watching me.

Over the weekend I went to North Carolina with my boyfriend, visiting his dad. While there I could squeeze in some painting. Here is the result, the log cabin built by his dad from scratch! Very cool... The trees were just budding, so no real greens yet.

Ich fuhr mit meinem Freund nach North Carolina ueber's Wochenende, wo wir seinen Vater besuchten, der rustikale Holzhaueser mit seinen eigenen Haenden baut. Hier ist sein Haus in Oel... Die Baueme schlugen gerade aus, so dass ich noch nicht viel Gruen verwenden konnte.

Flagler Paintout April 1-8

This weekend I participated at the Flagler Paintout in Flagler Beach, FL. It's about 30 miles north from my hometown. The event was sponsored by GOLA (Gallery of Local Art www.galleryoflocalart.com). Friday night the public was invited for an evening of meeting the participating artists.

A paintout is usually sponsored by a local gallery that invites artists to paint plein air in the area, and then gets word out to their patrons and residents that they can follow and/or view artists creating paintings of their immediate surroundings. At the end of the weeklong event the created pieces are displayed and for sale at the gallery. There were about 30 artists participating.

Dieses Wochenende nahm ich am Flagler Paintout teil. Es wurde durch eine lokale Gallerie gesponsort. Ein Paintout ist ein meist wochenlanges Ereignis, wo eine Gallerie Kuenstler zum Plein Air malen einlaedt, und dann Werbung dafuer macht. Touristen und Kunstliebhaber koennen dann den Kuenstlern folgen und sehen, wie ein Gemaelde vor Ort entsteht. Die noch nassen Bilder werden dann in der Gallerie fuer ca. 1 Monat ausgestellt und zum Verkauf angeboten. Dadurch entsteht eine Sammlung von Gemaelden, die alle lokalen Szenen und Charakter beinhalten, und Kuenstler und Kunstliebhaber koennen sich persoenlich kennenlernen und mehr ueber die Kreation eines Gemaeldes hautnah lernen. Wir hatten ca. 30 Kuenstler dieses Wochenende. Auf dem Photo unten nahm ich am Abend des Kennenlernens teil.

I painted the window of the neighboring store seen through the lattice with the staircase. I painted it in a very graphic, bold style. Since we only painted twice plein air this year, it took me a while to get back into it...

Ich malte ein Fenster des benachbarten Restaurants in einem sehr graphischen Stil. Da wir erst 2x dieses Jahr plein air gemalt hatten, fiel es mir ein bisschen schwer am Anfang.

After lunch I went to a local park and painted next to Mary - funny lady! It's always great to meet these wonderful artists... The sun disappeared behind a hazy wall of clouds, and the temps crept up to about 88 degrees...

Nach einem kurzen Imbiss malte ich mit Mary, einer sehr lustigen Kuenstlerin, in einem Park. Die Sonne verschwand hinter einer duennen Wolkenschicht und es wurde fast 30 Grad heiss!

At 2pm I was done with my second painting and exhausted. I framed my two efforts and hung them in the gallery for display.

Um 14 Uhr war ich mit meinem zweiten Gemaelde fertig, und war selber fix und fertig. Ich rahmte meine Bilder und hing sie in der Gallerie auf.

DeLand Art Festival - the recap

I survived the weekend! It was a lot of setup and preparation (thanks to my sweet boyfriend helping me all afternoon on Friday with setup, and breakdown on Sunday), and my booth looked great! Thanks to Buddy for loaning me the tent, and Pat for some of the walls.

Ich habe das Wochenende gut ueberstanden. Viel Arbeit und Hilfe von meinem Freund und etlichen Bekannten. Meine Bude sah sehr, sehr gut aus.

Saturday was well-visited, and I sold some prints. Sunday was much slower because of the impending rain. The festival was officially closed 2 hours before schedule, so most exhibitors (including me) finished breaking down their stuff before the torrential rain started.

Am Samstag hatten wir eine gute Besuchermenge, und ich verkaufte einige meiner Drucke. Am Sonntag war es weniger besucht, da Regen und Gewitter vorhergesagt waren. Alle Kuenstler (ich auch) konnten ihre Sachen und Buden vor dem grossen Regen gut unterbringen, was gut war.

Two of my paintings were pulled for judging, but since there were no categories, everything was lumped together (woodcarving was compared to jewelry to abstract art to watercolors to glass blowing). No prize for me this time... oh well. It was nice to meet a lot of great people, a special hi to my artist neighbors Larry and Chuck. There were about 130 artists exhibiting. I learned a lot about art festivals, and I am sure I will not exhibit at one too soon... Too much work for a not-so-sure turnaround.

I will participate at the Flagler paintout next weekend, will write about that later. Bye for now.

Zwei meiner Gemaelde wurden fuer die Jury genommen, doch da es keine Kategorien gab, waren alle Kunstwerke zusammen geschaetzt (wie kann man Holzschnitzerei mit Schmuck oder Glasblaeserei zu Abstrakter Kunst zu Aquarellen vergleichen?). Leider bekam ich also keinen Preis. Es waren ca. 130 Kuenstlerbuden am Fest. Ich lernte jedoch viele nette Leute kennen, vor allem meine Nachbarkuenstler Larry und Chuck, und lernte viel ueber Kunstfeste. Bin mir ziemlich sicher, so bald keines mehr als Aussteller mitzumachen... Zu viel Arbeit und keine sichere Aussicht auf Verkauefe, und man ist soviel vom Wetter abhaenging...

Also, bis zum naechstenmal, naechste Woche werde ich an einem Paintout in Flagler mitmachen, werde dann wieder schreiben! Tschuess!

Yippeeeh! The whole series is finished! Here is the final of the church I started yesterday. I know the top looks crooked, but I aligned it and it is perfectly straight - it's just visual - really!

Juchu! Alles fertig! Heute abend habe ich die letzten Pinselstriche an das letzte Gemaelde gelegt. Ich weiss, der Zwirbelturm sieht schief aus, doch ich habe es etliche Male gemessen und kritisch angeschaut, und es ist perfekt gerade - wirklich!

And for interest sake, here is the same scene painted from the same reference photo in 2003. Back then I made up the sunset and those colors...

Zum Vergleich, hier ist das Gemaelde von 2003, das ich vom selben Photo gemalt habe, jedoch habe ich damals die Farben des Sonnenuntergangs aus der Phantasie hinzugefuegt.

And here are all five paintings in this new series. They are going to be printed as greeting cards and sold with 3 other scenes as a package at the festival in June. Again, to refresh everybody's memory, the community of four villages celebrates its 950th anniversary this year. These five originals will be picked up by my parents next month and then being offered for sale at the festival.

Und hier sind alle 5 Gemaelde dieser Serie. Wie schon gesagt, diese werden mit 3 anderen Motiven als Grusskarten-Package waehrend des 950. Jubilaeums im Juni verkauft. Meine Eltern kommen im April zu Besuch und holen dann die Originale ab, so dass sie auch am Fest zum Verkauf angeboten werden koennen.

5th painting - Unterwittighausen

This is the main church in the community, serving about 1,000 parishioners. I really need to finish this series before the end of the month, so tonight I made quite a bit of progress on this one. I forgot to take a picture when I did the acrylic burnt sienna drawing, so it starts with the drawing plus shadows in oil, then some colors added, and to finish off tonight, the sky. Since this scene has almost no trees, I decided to make the sky more dramatic and followed the reference photo. More later...

Dies ist die Kirche in Unterwittighausen. I muss diese Serie wirklich vor Ende Maerz vollenden, und nun habe ich mich endlich an das letzte Gemaelde gemacht. Wie immer, Skizze in Braun und die Schatten in Oel festgehalten, dann ein bisschen Farbe, und ich schliesse diesen Post mit dem dramatischen Himmel. Da diese Szene fast keine Vegetation hat, dachte ich mir, ich folge dem Referenzphoto ganz genau und banne den tollen Himmel auf die Leinwand. Bis spaeter!

Finished! I painted for about 1 hour this morning, and I am very satisfied with it. The coloring looks awesome, and the tree on the left looks nice and airy.

Fertig! Habe das 4. Gemaelde in einer Stunde heute morgen fertiggemalt, und ich bin sehr zufrieden damit. Die Farben wirken gut zusammen, und der linke Baum sieht luftig und filigran aus.

I decided to add the fifth church to the series, so I am going to start on the church in Unterwittighausen this week. There are 5 churches in the community of Wittighausen. I had painted it about 10 years ago, but it's a different style and coloring that it won't fit harmoniously...

Ich habe mich entschlossen, die Kirche von Unterwittighausen der Serie anzuschliessen. Ich habe sie zwar vor 10 Jahren gemalt, doch der Stil und die Farbgebung sind so grundverschieden, dass es nicht zu den uebrigen 4 passen wird. Werde hoffentlich dieses Wochenende damit anfangen...

4th painting - Sigismund Kapelle

I did a lot of work on this one today, going from scrubbing in the shadows to adding color throughout. I like the muted colors, the reference photo I have is from late fall, so the colorization is very muted and quiet, with warm shadows and cool light. This little chapel sits on a hill in the village of Oberwittighausen, and is one of a couple in this area that are built in an octogon shape. The large linden tree is said to be 1000 years old, and was worshipped in olden times as a healing power for diseases. I did an extensive paper for my Abitur (to graduate from high school in Germany) about this chapel - wow, that was quite some time ago. I do remember I received an A on it ;-)

Heute habe ich grossen Fortschritt mit dem 4. Gemaelde gemacht, die 8-eckige Sigismund Kapelle in Oberwittighausen. Ich mag die etwas kuehleren and blassen Farben des Referenzphotos, das im spaeten Herbst aufgenommen wurde. Ich lasse die Bilder fuer sich selber sprechen... Fuer mein Abitur habe ich einen grossen Bericht ueber diese Kapelle geschrieben - wow, das war schon ziemlich lange her. Ich erinnere mich, dass ich 'ne Eins dafuer bekam ;-)

Third one finished - yeah! There are still a couple of areas I might fuss with later, but overall I am very satisfied with it. The texture of the church walls is wonderful up close. Might have to work on the trees a bit more and deepen the shadows overall, but I will do that when the whole series is done. Til later...

Das dritte ist vollendet - jippieh! Ein paar Stellen muss ich spaeter noch aufbessern, aber bis jetzt bin ich sehr zufrieden damit, vor allem die Textur der Waende ist super. Werde vielleicht noch die Baueme verbessern und die Schatten ein bisschen vertiefen, aber damit werde ich warten, bis die ganze Serie fertig ist. Bis zum naechsten Mal!

Finally I am getting back into my paint mode! Not with as much fury as last year, but at least I'm producing. Last night I did a bit more on Poppenhausen, mostly the sky, and some of its blue color I repeated in the streets again. Notice how the cast shadow on the tower is the focal point and very effective, even at this beginning stage.

Endlich bin ich wieder voll im Malen - nicht ganz so eifrig wie letztes Jahr, aber immerhin... Gestern abend malte ich den Himmel von Poppenhausen, und ein bisschen mehr Blau auf der Strasse. Der Schatten der Kirche, der auf den Turm faellt, ist sogar in dieser ersten Malphase sehr eindrucksvoll.

This afternoon I met with Sharon in Ormond and we painted for 3 hours at Tomoka State Park. The light was a bit pale and not the best, but we both produced 2 paintings. Here is my first setup, some canoes at the water's edge.

Heute nachmittag traf ich mich mit Sharon in Ormond and wir malten fuer 3 Stunden in Tomoka State Park. Das Winterlicht war etwas fahl und nicht besonders, aber wir konnten beide je zwei Gemaelde produzieren und sind ziemlich zufrieden. Hier ist meine erste Szene, ein paar Kanus am Wasser.

After this effort I turned 90 degrees and painted the scene that Sharon chose for her first one. I think this one is really good and I especially like the painterly effect and how the colors work together.

Danach drehte ich mich nach rechts und malte die Szene, die Sharon fuer ihr erstes Bild gewaehlt hatte. Ich finde diese Szene besonders gut gelungen, vor allem, wie gut die Farben zusammenhalten fuer die gewuenschte Wirkung.

3rd painting - Poppenhausen

I started the 3rd painting this weekend, didn't get too much done, but at least it's started. I moved my easel to the dining room, since it's still way too cold to work in my non-heated studio with cement floors. As usual, main shadows laid over my burnt sienna sketch, and then I started with some colors.

Am Wochenende fing ich endlich das 3. Gemaelde an, nicht besonders viel, aber immerhin. Ich zog meine Staffelei ins Esszimmer, da mein ungeheiztes Studio immer noch zu kalt ist. Wir haben immer noch kalte Temperaturen, seit 1. January haben wir fast nie ueber 15 Grad gesehen, was sehr, sehr selten ist... aber ich will mich ja nicht beklagen, wenn der halbe Kontinent unter 2 metern Schnee liegt... Wie immer legte ich meine Haupt-Schatten in Dunkelblau ueber meine rote Skizze. Danach fing ich mit einigen richtigen Farben hier und da an.

I continued the red of the roofs into the sunlit parts of the street and walls, so the painting is a bit more coherent. You have to repeat colors everywhere to keep it interesting. I mixed some of my colors with Zinc White, which is an awful paint. It has a superslick consistency which is hard to mix. I finally threw the whole $15 tube away... couldn't make it work. I find that Titanium White is so much better. I never noticed the difference in texture, maybe it's just noticeable in these cold temperatures... Til next time...

Ich legte ein Rot fuer die Daecher an, und wiederholte diese Farbe in den sonnigen Teilen der Strasse und Waende, was wichtig fuer die Kontinuitaet des Gemaeldes ist. Ich war mit meiner Tube Zink Weiss so frustriert, dass ich die ganze Tube wegwarf... ich finde Titanium Weiss viel einfacher zu mischen, vielleicht sind die kalten Temperaturen daran schuld...

Whew, after about 2 months of no plein airing, and the 2 pieces in the studio, I went out to New Smyrna Beach with Pat today. It was really hard to get back into the groove. My first sketch was wiped, the second attempt was abandoned after 20 minutes, and out of frustration I sketched this blue van parked in front of a dark red building. I felt better then, but didn't feel like I produced anything up to my standards. Need to go back out a lot more again!

Nach 2 Monaten Pause vom Plein Air Malen traf ich mich mit Pat in New Smyrna Beach, wo ich nach 2 vergeblichen Versuchen diese kleine Oelskizze vollbrachte. Nicht meine normale Qualitaet, aber wenigstens weiss ich nun, dass ich doch oefters draussen ueben muss...

Finally had some time again to paint today. I finished the second church painting for Germany. Here it is. I had to do the front of the church, along with all the grasses and shrubbery in the foreground. Cleaned up some details, but that was pretty much it.

Heute schloss ich das 2. Gemaelde fuer Wittighausen ab. Ich musste die Kirchenfront und die Graeser/Straeucher im Vorgrund fertigmalen, und das war eigentlich alles. Gratulation an Bernhard Henneberger zur heutigen Wiederwahl zum Buergermeister!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Long time no paint... it has been super chilly here in Florida, and I was very busy with family life and projects and job... Finally today I found some time to start the second painting.

Habe schon lange nicht mehr gemalt... es war eine Superkaelte hier in Florida die letzten 10 Tage, und ich hatte viel zu tun mit Familie, Projekten und meinem Job... Heute fand ich endlich ein paar Stunden, das 2. Gemaelde anzufangen.

As usual, I start with putting in the shadows with a mix of ultramarine blue and burnt sienna, a nice dark purple.

Wie immer, fange ich damit an, die Schatten mit einer Mixtur von Ultramarin-Blau und Gebrannter Sienna einzulegen.

Then I put in the main colors without any gradation, just to get an idea of colorization.

Dann fuege ich einfache Farben hinzu, damit ich die generelle Idee der Farbierung bekomme.

This is where I stopped today. The lower left part is almost done. Old mixtures found on my palette were perfect for the colors of those houses, so I concentrated on them instead of the church.

Hier hoerte ich dann nach ein paar Stunden auf. Die untere linke Ecke ist ziemlich fertig. Ein paar alte Mischungen, die ich auf meiner Palette fand, waren einfach perfekt fuer die Farbierung dieser Haeuser, so dass ich mich auf diese konzentrierte, und liess die Kirche bis jetzt ziemlich links liegen.

Thank you for everybody's comments! I really appreciate them. I finished the painting last night. I might fiddle with it once the whole set is done, so they are consistent in coloring and hue, but I'll leave it alone for now.
Vielen Dank fuer alle Kommentare! Ich malte das Bild gestern abend fertig, werde vielleicht einige kleine Details aendern, wenn das ganze Set fertig ist. Ich moechte, dass sie ziemlich gleich sind in der Farbe und Schattierung.

Here are a few details for my fellow artists:

The steeple for comparison - it is important to incorporate background with object. As you can see on the left, the steeple looks cut out and flat against the sky. Once I blended a bit of the sky color right into the steeple, it looks more coherent and integrated.

Hier einige Details und Info fuer Euch Kuenstler:

Der Kirchturm zum Vergleich - es ist wichtig, das Objekt mit dem Hintergrund zu integrieren. Links schaut der Turm flach und wie ein Scherenschnitt gegen den Himmel aus. Ich wischte ein paar Pinselstriche der Himmels-Farbe in den Turm, und voila! - nun gehoeren Himmel und Turm zusammen.

For the sky, it's important to not just mix blue with white and paint it all a flat color. There is a lot of atmosphere (dust particles etc) near the earth, so I usually mix a bit of burnt sienna or some Venetian red into my sky color to be blended into the blue for the top parts. It gives some nice variation and makes it more realistic. (I am proud of those trees, don't they look great?)

Fuer den Himmel ist es wichtig, nicht einfach flach blau mit weiss zu mischen. Wegen der Atmosphaere und kleinen Staubpartikeln, die nahe der Erde sind, wirkt der Himmel weniger blau am Horizont. Ich mische oefters ein bisschen dunkelrot oder braun in die Himmelsfarbe, was dann mehr realistisch aussieht. (Findet ihr nicht auch, dass die Baeume wirklich gut gelungen sind?)

Detail of the bottom right. Again, the house is a nice variation of yellow, cool blues and pinks for interest. A flat color would be boring, even though the homeowner of course likes it that way! I don't blend a lot, you can see some of those yummy ridges of the impasto in the sidewalk.
Detail unten rechts. Das Haus ist wieder nicht eine flache Farbe (obwohl der Eigentuemer das natuerlich bevorzugt), doch ich Gemaelde habe ich gelbe, kuehle blaue und rosa Pinselstriche gemalt, ohne zu verwischen. Dadurch wirkt diese grosse Flaeche der Hauswand viel interessanter. Man kann es auch im Schatten der Wand rechts sehen. Ich verwische meine Farben sowieso nicht viel, es ist interessanter, das Impasto/dicke Pinselstriche zu sehen, siehe Gehsteig.

950 Years - Vilchband

I got up early this morning to start the first painting, the church in Vilchband. I chose this one to start, since it has the least amount of trees, which I always find hard to paint. Here is a view of my studio, it's a sunroom glassed in on 3 sides in the back of my house. It is freezing today (about 50 degrees), and I was chilled. At least Gunner kept me company.

Ich stand frueh heute auf, um mich an das erste Gemaelde zu wagen, die Kirche in Vilchband. Ich waehlte dieses Motiv als erstes, da es die wenigsten Baeume hat... Ich male Architektur und Gebaeude lieber als Baueme, die ich sehr schwer finde. Hier ist ein Blick auf meine Staffelei in meinem Studio - ein Wintergarten, der auf 3 Seiten verglast ist. Heute ist es leider sehr, sehr kalt, nur 11 Grad, und ich fror ziemlich, mit dem kalten Zementboden... wenigstens leistete Gunner mir ein bisschen Gesellschaft.

My utensils ready to go, palette with about 7 colors (I don't use a lot of different colors as to keep the color harmony), a couple of brushes and palette knives, turpentine and some coffee.

Meine Utensilien neben der Staffelei, und natuerlich heisser Kaffee.

1. Shadows laid in with dark blue. Schatten mit Dunkelblau festgehalten.

2. A bit more color added overall to establish the color pattern. Ein bisschen mehr Farbe ueber das ganze Gemaelde hinzugefuegt.

3. After 2 hours I got too chilled and decided to stop. The bottom right is pretty much done. The whole painting is almost half-way completed. Til later! Nach 2 Stunden hoerte ich hier auf, da es mir viel zu kalt war. Unten rechts ist ziemlich fertig. Das ganze Gemaelde ist fast halb-fertig zu diesem Zeitpunkt. Details kommen ganz am Schluss... Bis spaeter!

950 Years!!!

As most of you know, I grew up in a small town in Germany. The community of Wittighausen consists of 4 different small towns (avg. population 700) in Northern Bavaria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wittighausen, http://www.wittighausen.de/). They are going to celebrate their 950th annniversary in June next year (founded in 1060 - wow!). I was asked to contribute some of my older paintings as a basis for greeting cards to be sold then, and also provide some newer paintings. A commission of 4 new scenes of the churches of each town! Most of the original paintings will be available for sale during the festivities next year, and will also be sold as a set of 8 greeting cards.

Zum 950. Jubilaeum der Gemeinschaft Wittighausen, wo ich aufwuchs, wurde ich beauftragt, einige meiner aelteren Gemaelde zum Drucken als Grusskarten zur Verfuegung zu stellen, und noch 4 neue Gemaelde der uebrigen Ortsteile anzustellen. Die meisten der Originale werden dann auch zum Verkauf waehrend des Fests im Juni 2010 angeboten.

Dies sind die ersten Gemaelde, die ich vor Jahren gemalt habe, und im Set zu erhalten sind.

I started the 4 new paintings this week, and here are the preliminary drawings for placement and distribution of light and shade. These are washed in with burnt sienna in acrylics, to be developed later with oils in color. They are each 15.5"x20".

Hier sind die preliminaeren Leinwaende, um die Motive gut zu plazieren und das Schatten- und Lichtspiel festzusetzen. Alle Gemaelde sind 40x50cm. Die Grundierung besteht aus braunen Akrylfarben, worauf ich dann spaeter in Oel die Farben entwickeln werde. Bin schon sehr zufrieden damit.

I will post the progress here on this blog regularly, so you can see how I develop my studio paintings, and to also keep me motivated to finish them in time! As usual, any and all comments and ideas are welcome!

Fair Share Garden & Marketplace

Today I participated with my kids Billy and Kirsten and her friend Nicole at the Fair Share Garden event. It was chilly and very windy. Not a lot of visitors, so I decided to postpone my demo again and instead help with painting the mural. The kids helped too and had lots of fun.

Heute fand das Fair Share Garden Ereignis in Daytona Beach statt. Da es sehr kalt und windig war, entschloss ich mich, wieder mal meine Mal-Demo zu verschieben und stattdessen den Freiwilligen Helfern beim Malen des Murals zu helfen. Billy, Kirsten und ihre Freundin Nicole halfen auch eifrig mit. Es kamen nicht viele Besucher, so dass wir viel Zeit beim Malen verbringen konnten. Es machte allen grossen Spass, trotz der Kaelte (ca. 10 Grad mit Wind).

DeLand Excursion

I framed my paintings in some beautiful new frames I just ordered. Here they are, ready for the gallery.

Ich habe neue Rahmen bestellt, und hier sind einige Bilder, fertig zum Transport zur Gallerie.

After I dropped off some of these paintings at the gallery in DeLand, I decided to stay for a while to paint. The weather was spectacular, warm and sunny with beautiful little clouds. Here's my result from a sidewalk by the DeLand courthouse.

Nachdem ich einige der Gemaelde in der Gallerie abgeliefert hatte, beschloss ich mich, das wunderschoene Wetter mit blauem Himmel auszunutzen und ein Bild zu malen. Ich stand beim Gerichtshaus in DeLand auf dem Gehsteig und malte dieses alte Gebauede mit den vielen Kabeln darueber.

A little side note: As usual, I got comments from some passers-by. Here are some samples of the most popular ones: Do you paint? (No, I'm waiting for the bus.). I can't draw a straight line. (Okay, nice information.) My aunt used to paint, too! (Wow, that's pretty cool, I don't know her, I don't care.) From guys only, any age: If I stand over here, can you paint me in the picture? To which I always reply: I only do nudes, so please let me know when you are ready. (That suggestion usually takes care of that!)

Eine kleine Nebenbemerkung: Wie immer bekam ich auch heute Kommentare von Leuten, die vorueberliefen. Hier sind einige der oefters-benutzten Kommentare: Malst du? (Nein, ich warte auf'n Bus.) Ich kann nicht mal 'ne gerade Linie zeichnen. (Okay, danke fuer die Info.) Meine Tante hat auch immer gerne gemalt! (Wow, cool, ich kenne sie nicht, und mache mir auch nichts draus.) Unfortunately the event at the Fair Share Garden in Daytona Beach was totally rained out and will be rescheduled. I will announce the new date here once it's set.

Leider war meine Demo und das ganze Ereignis des Fair Share Gardens ausgeregnet. Wenn ein neues Datum gesetzt wird, werde ich es hier ankuendigen.

I am going to be participating at the first art festival at the Vienna's Coffeehouse in DeBary. It is held at The Parkview Point Building, 275 S. Highway 17-92 in DeBary, Saturday and Sunday, Dec 12&13, from noon til 6pm. This is indoor, so weather will not be a problem. After browsing about 30 art setups you can enjoy gourmet coffee and pastries in an Old World European atmosphere at Claudia's coffeehouse downstairs.

Naechstes Wochenende werde ich in einem Kunstfest teilnehmen, das in einem stilvollen Gebauede in DeBary veranstaltet wird. Claudia, die Besitzerin des Vienna's Coffeehouses im ersten Geschoss hat etliche Kuenstler zusammengesetzt, um dies moeglich zu machen.

On The Way To Thanksgiving Dinner

On the way to Thanksgiving Dinner earlier this week I pulled off the country lanes and painted this scene. Nothing remarkable, but at least I tried it - painting with cars zipping by. A nice state trooper even stopped and made sure I was okay ;-) 16"x7", oil on masonite.

Auf dem Weg zum Erntedankefest-Dinner mit Freunden diese Woche hielt ich am Strassenrand an und malte diese Farm-Szene. Das wollte ich schon immer machen, am Weg anzuhalten und was malen, mit Autos dicht vorbeiduesen. Nichts besonderes, aber wenigstens habe ich's mal versucht! Ein Polizist hielt sogar an und versichterte sich, dass ich okay war. Wie nett!

I spent a wonderful day with my painter friends Pat, Sharon and Dodi at Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge today. The weather was glorious, almost too warm. We saw egrets and lots buzzards. And I painted pure nature - no buildings! It sure was hard for me, but I am pretty pleased with these results.

Heute verbrachte ich einen tollen Tag mit meinen Kuenstler-Freundinnen Pat, Sharon und Dodi bei Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge. Das Wetter war wunderschoen, fast zu warm. Wir sahen Stoerche und eine Menge Bussarde. Und ich malte pure Natur - ohne jegwelche Architektur! Es war sehr schwer fuer mich, doch ich bin ziemlich zufrieden mit meinen Resultaten.

This was done first, looking almost into the rising sun at 10am.

Dieses erste Gemaelde malte ich um 10 Uhr morgens, in die blendende Sonne schauend.

Lake Woodruff Marsh, 5x7, oil on masonite, $100

This one I did by turning about 180 degrees away from the blinding sun from the same spot.

Fuer mein zweites Gemaelde drehte ich mich einfach herum und malte die Szene mit den Marsch-Graesern.

This one was on the way back to the car, looking along the path. We decided to paint in the shade, because the sun was just really beating down on us, and we had figured we really didn't need sunlotion end of November. But hey, it's Florida, still over 75 degrees!

Fuer das letzte Gemaelde suchten wir uns einen schattigen Platz unter einer grossen Eiche auf dem Weg zurueck zum Auto. Die Sonne war wirklich heiss, und niemand dachte an Sonnenschutz - ja, das braucht man selbst Ende November in Florida, 25 Grad!

Join me on the first Saturday of December 5th for a morning of Arts & Crafts at the Fair Share Garden in Daytona Beach. This event is being hosted by the Fair Share Garden in conjunction with the Art Consortium of Volusia County.
Activities include:
~ Community mural creation with public participation.
~ Plein Air painting and informal plein air demonstration by me at 10 a.m.
~ Holiday Decorating with Herb Demonstration at 11 a.m.

This is a fund raising event for the Fair Share Garden. Nominal cash donations are appreciated, but not required for entry. Donations of used gardening equipment are also appreciated.

50 - and a new goal!

WOW! Today I painted my 50th painting since Oct 08 when I started doing plein air (painting on location). Here is a collage of most of them. Yes, I have to admit, a few of them were duds, but - I also sold 4 of them so far! And I only started exhibiting 6 months ago!

My new goal for 2010 is to paint 100. There, I said it... it's public... now I have to keep my word... It's been fun, I learned a lot since that very first one 13 months ago, and without all of your guys' help, support, positive comments and nudging me forward I couldn't have done it. Thanks so much! WOW! Heute habe ich mein 50. Gemaelde seit Oktober 08 hergestellt, als ich angefangen habe, plein air (an Ort und Stelle) zu malen. Hier ist eine Kollage von den meisten dieser Bilder. Ja, einige von den 50 sind nicht gut genug zum Vorzeigen, doch habe ich immerhin 4 davon verkauft, und ich habe erst seit 6 Monaten das oeffentliche Ausstellen begonnen! Mein neues Ziel fuer 2010 ist, 100 Gemaelde zu malen. Okay, nun hab ich's hier oeffentlich gesagt, nun muss ich mich auch dran halten...

Es hat viel Spass gemacht, ich habe seit dem allerersten Gemaelde vor 13 Monaten viel dazugelernt, und euere Unterstuetzung, Hilfe, und positiven Kommentare und emails haben mir sehr dabei geholfen. Vielen Dank. Bis zum naechsten Mal! Tschuess, Eure Ruth

Entry Shadows, DeLand

The beautiful shadow cast in the entryway of this old brick building in downtown DeLand captured my interest. There was a music festival going on downtown, so we had great music to paint by... 8x10, oil on masonite, $300.

Dieses tolle Schattenspiel mit der tollen alten Umrahmung gefiel mir sehr gut. Nebendran war ein Musik-Festival im Gange, was kann man sich sonst noch wuenschen! 20x25cm, Oel.

DeLand Courthouse

This wonderful fall morning (about 75 degrees, blue sky, no humidity) I met with Pat, Dodi and Sharon in DeLand where we all agreed on this scene of the dome of the courthouse across some alleyways.

Heute morgen unter blauem Himmel und ca. 20 Grad ohne Luftfeuchtigkeit traf ich mich mit Pat, Dodi und Sharon in DeLand, wo wir die Kuppel des Gerichtshauses malten. Hier ist die Szene.

Venetian Bay Art Festival - the painting

Today I finally found some time to touch up the painting I did on the last afternoon of the art festival 3 weeks ago. This is something I rarely do, but after looking at it for a while, I decided it needed some more booths and that the fountain looked better being "on", with water dripping. 8x10, oil on masonite, $300.

Heute hatte ich endlich Zeit, dieses Gemaelde, das ich vor 3 Wochen waehrend des Kunstfestes malte, ein bisschen aufzubessern. Normalerweise belasse ich meine Gemaelde genauso, wie ich sie heimbringe, doch nachdem ich es nun laengere Zeit angeschaut hatte, entschied ich mich, ein paar Buden hinzuzufuegen, und den Brunnen sprinkeln zu lassen. 20x25, Oel of Tafel.

Overcast day

I had a chance to paint a bit today, unfortunately it was overcast, and that is a very hard lighting situation for painting. It is so much better when the sun is shining and making a nice light-and-shade pattern of the scene... I am posting my efforts anyway... this was at the Sugar Mill Gardens in Port Orange.

Heute hatte ich wieder eine Gelegenheit, zu malen. Leider war es bewoelkt/bedeckt, und das ist nicht die ideale Situation zum Malen, wie ich wieder mal entdeckt habe. Es ist so viel einfacher, wenn die Sonne scheint und somit die Szene in Licht/Schatten-Muster teilt, als dass alles ziemlich "grau" ist, wie es heute war. Nun ja, hier sind meine Resultate.

Storm Over Ponce Inlet Jetty

This morning it finally felt like fall! It was stormy, cloudy, and a bit cooler - still warm enough to wear just a T-shirt, though... I painted this scene at the jetty in Ponce Inlet. The ocean is behind the lifeguard station, and the pier to the right divides it from the inlet. Lots of surfers out there, but the sun never made it. 15"x7", oil on panel. $300.

Heute morgen kam endlich der Herbst! Es war windig und bedeckt, und ein kleines bisschen "kuehler" - jedoch immer noch T-shirt Wetter... Diese Szene war am "Inlet" in Ponce Inlet. Hinter der Lifeguard Station zeigt sich das Meer ein bisschen, und die Pier rechts in der Mitte teilt dann das etwas ruhigere Inlet ein. Vordergrund sind Sandduenen. Viele Surfer im Wasser, doch die Sonne zeigte sich kein einziges Mal.
